Big Magazine

The theme of the upcoming issue of Big Magazine is (funny enough) the word 'Big.' I was asked to contribute work to the issue, so I pitched them a number of ideas and ended up doing two projects for the issue. I've always loved Big Magazine and I'm very happy to have been asked to contribute.

Big Family: For the first project, I photographed a family with the last name Big. It's a simple 'day in the life' documentation of this family. It was incredibly difficult to find anyone with this last name. The first example shown above is of T.J. Big (the dad) riding his lawnmower while listening to "Green Grass and the High Tides" by The Outlaws on his ipod. The second is a detail of old family portraits from their family room wall.

Big Imagination: I photographed kids for the second project. Everything is 'big' to kids, so I photographed each kid and asked them to make a drawing of the biggest thing they could think of. The example shown above is of a young boy named David who created a drawing of a monster with people and blocks of cheese in its belly. This is probably my favorite drawing of the whole bunch. The blocks of cheese really sealed the deal for me.

More imagery from these projects will be posted in a few weeks, once the publication has been released.

Photographs of Tom Sachs for ARS and Chuck Hoberman for I.D.

On July 31st (my 30th birthday), I photographed artist Tom Sachs and documented his New York City studio for a new Madrid based art publication called ARS. Tom's work is really some of my favorite work around. More imagery will be posted the editorial section soon.

I also just photographed inventor and designer Chuck Hoberman for I.D. Magazine. His work can be viewed here.

I.D. Magazine: Peter Arnell

My photos of Peter Arnell are out in the latest issue of I.D. As mentioned in a previous post, this was a pretty strange shoot, which included us literally being kicked out of Arnell's studio before we were able to get all the photographs we'd intended to take. None of our equipment could directly touch the floor in his office. Instead craft paper was put down and all the seams were secured with blue masking tape. If anything were to be moved (or allowed to be moved), white gloved employees were the only people who could do the job.

Peter Arnell has been getting a lot of press lately, mainly painting him in a pretty negative light. Even though I was able to witness him and plenty of his unique behavior, I'm happy to say that the article in I.D. is more neutral in approach than any of the other articles I've read lately about Peter Arnell. In this photograph, we somehow convinced Arnell to hold the model (which weights about 65 pounds) of his newly released electric Peapod car. You can learn more about the Peapod here. I'll post the article soon, but in the meantime, click here to view the opening spread.

Upcoming shoots for SEED, Dwell and driving aimlessly through Kansas with a View Camera

This week I'm traveling to Kansas to revisit a project I began last year that involves loosely traveling the Oregon Trail, to document what exists there now. I haven't had (or made) the time recently to do my own work, so this trip is a very good thing.

When I return, I'll be photographing the workspace of legendary neurologist Oliver Sacks for SEED Magazine (shown to the left). For a larger look at his desk, click here.

From there I'll be traveling to an organic farm near Cedar Rapids, Iowa for Dwell Magazine to photograph a really gorgeous modern farmhouse. I love that these organic farmers live in a beautiful, yet humble modern structure. I haven't spent any time in Iowa, so it'll be fun.
